listen ...

I take Fridays off so am able to sleep in for a half hour extra. I lazily breathe in the morning and enjoy the slow start. From my original normal waking time I am aware that the dogs are a little restless. Sage is usually so subtle with her communicating to get me up. She will simply sit at my bed side and stare me down. Occasionally offering a high pitch quiet request. This morning she was a little more impatient. I was probably slower off the mark.  She tried her subtlety to no response. She jumped up behind me, lay down and pushed all four legs onto my back to urge me off the bed. That set my day off with a giggle. I love it when the animals make their wishes clear.

Then I realise - that is usually what they are doing all the time. We simply need to tune in better. I could have mistaken Sage's request for an inconvenient stretch. I know however that it is not so. I showed people through the aquarium the other day and was amazed that at times I had to point out to them how the fish were interacting with us through the glass. Following us if we changed direction. Looking at us and paying close attention to what was unfamiliar in some cases and familiar in others.
My friend told me a heart rendering story that demonstrates how we are more connected than we think we are. She has humming birds nesting on her patio in a chandelier. The humans in her home were sitting just inside the home adjacent to the patio and noted that they may have been disturbing the bird as it was shouting at the window. It was a sad realisation, when they later realised that the bird asking for help. It's baby on learning to fly had fallen in the pond and sadly drowned. My friend was devastated that she did not understand the birds plea for help. In spite of the accident the birds continued to nest in the crystal light fitting. The celebration of their continued loyalty to my friend was enhanced when they had another chick. This time there were no risky flight lessons over the pond. The chick was taught to fly inside my frineds home while all humans were present.
We are in such a special time in human consciousness. Our world's are becoming more and more entwined with the animal kingdom. Humans have built on sacred natural ground. Now we have to learn to acknowledge our fellow planet dwellers. We need to work out sensitive ways to understand their dialogue. We need to work towards sharing this planet with all the other sentient beings that make up our community.
Listen. Watch. Sense. Feel. It is such magical fun to be a part of such a rich and diverse community.

Morning Sage😙🐾 and thank you

A Lesson in Surrender

I always found the concept of surrender a cop out.  Something one would do if one was too weak to take on a situation.   So, when I found myself in a situation where I am unable to follow my passion in the most effective manner, I experienced great discomfort.  Speaking up was immediately taken as judgement.  Even though it was never intended as that.  The presumed judgement resulted in defence.  And the drama began, and unfolded.   Chasms and vindication ruled.  Frustration and finger pointing. What has this to do with animals?   For those of us that work with animals, they are like kids.  They sense how we feel.  Our moods affect them.  So, when this type of angst environment is created, the disturbance affects the creatures that we love. The lesson – stop the angst.  It is not worth upsetting the animals.  Nothing is.  So, surrender.  Not sure where this will go.  But I am here righ...

What is success?

Success is not giving a hoot.  If you can be a 45 year old cat woman playing in front of 3000 people, totally uninhibited, then you are succeeding.  Because if you are able to do that, you are in the present moment, not caring about what anybody else thinks.  Not worried about their judgements or how you think you should be coming across.  (ok, so I was a little worried, so not 100% successful, but I continue to strive to be free of this nonsence) When you have that presence of mind in front of animals, that is when you are succeeding.

On his retirement. A tribute to a legend

Veterinarian & human extraordinaire. 50 years of true service to the animal world, the animal people, and to his animal-loving family.  Four siblings all who care significantly for animals as a result of the way we were raised.  To respect life.  Because that is who our father his.  Our father is more than a vet.  He is a compassionate man.  A vet who took his oath to care for animals to the greatest level, inspiring those close and around him to do the same.  Caring so deeply.  Working so hard.  Ensuring that he always did his best.  He has such depth and wisdom.  He has always had a following of people in his life who he wisely guides.  His generosity is boundless.  He has inspired his children way more than can be imagined.  We are pretty sure there are not many people who are so fortunate to have this example of humble love to follow.  We are equally unsure whether we can truly honour his example by dupli...
